Custom domains

Every published Black Whole site gets a public address immediately. If you own a domain, you can put the site on it too — this page explains the three levels, from zero setup to full control.

Your published address

When you publish from the workspace, your site goes live at a Black Whole address based on your project. It is HTTPS-secured, updates every time you republish, and needs no DNS or hosting setup on your side. For many projects this is all you will ever need.

The custom domain field

In the workspace, open Tools and then Publishing. The custom domain field records the domain you intend to serve this project from, so the project and its settings stay tied to that domain. Saving the field does not move DNS by itself — the records below are what actually route traffic, and they are set wherever your domain is registered.

Pointing your own domain at a self-hosted copy

If you export the project through GitHub and host it yourself (any static host or your own server), point your domain at that host:

  1. Deploy the exported repository on your host and note the address it gives you.
  2. For an apex domain (example.com), add the A or ALIAS/ANAME record your host specifies.
  3. For a subdomain (www.example.com or app.example.com), add a CNAME record pointing at the host address.
  4. Wait for DNS to propagate — minutes usually, up to a day in the worst case — then let the host issue its HTTPS certificate, which is automatic on most hosts.

DNS lives at your registrar

Black Whole never sees or changes your registrar account. If a record looks right but the domain does not resolve, the cause is almost always propagation time or a conflicting old record — remove stale A/CNAME entries for the same name and check again.

Which level do you need?

  • Sharing a link or launching fast: the published Black Whole address.
  • Branding a project you still host here: record the domain in Tools, then Publishing.
  • Full control of hosting and DNS: export through GitHub, host anywhere, and point your domain with the records above.
